Facts about common ingredients used in baking or cooking.
Bananas Are Actually Berries!
- Did you know bananas are considered berries? Botanically speaking, a berry is a fruit that grows from a flower with only one ovary. Bananas fit that description, but you’ll never find them in the berry section at the store!
Self-Rising Flour Makes Things Fluffy!
- Self-rising flour contains baking powder and salt, which makes it a special flour for baking. The baking powder is the leavening agent that helps cakes, pancakes, and muffins rise by creating bubbles in the dough. These bubbles make the batter light and fluffy when cooked!
Baking Powder vs. Baking Soda
- Baking powder and baking soda are both leavening agents, but they work a little differently. Baking powder is a mix of baking soda and an acid (like cream of tartar), so it doesn’t need an extra acidic ingredient to help it rise. Baking soda needs an acid (like vinegar or lemon juice) to make it bubble!
Sweetened Condensed Milk Is SUPER Sweet!
- Sweetened condensed milk is made by removing most of the water from regular milk, and then adding sugar. It’s super thick and sweet, which is why it’s great for desserts like banana pudding!
Walnuts Are Packed with Nutrients!
- Walnuts are a superfood that are high in healthy fats, protein, and fiber. They also contain lots of omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for brain health. Adding walnuts to your desserts gives them a crunchy twist and some extra nutrition!
Nutmeg Is a Spice That’s Perfect for Baking!
- Nutmeg is a warm, aromatic spice that comes from the seed of the nutmeg tree. It’s commonly used in desserts, especially around the holidays. Just a pinch can make your treats smell amazing and give them a cozy flavor!
Cool Whip Is Light and Fluffy!
- Cool Whip is made from water, oils, and sugar, but it’s light and fluffy, which is perfect for topping pies, cakes, and banana pudding. It’s a quick alternative to whipped cream and is easy for kids to use in the kitchen!
The Banana Plant Is Not Actually a Tree!
- The banana plant is actually a giant herb, not a tree. It’s one of the largest plants that doesn’t have a woody stem! So, those big banana “trees” you see are technically huge, leafy plants.
